New technology offers more ways for us to communicate with each other. Yet with so many different media available, communication just isn't easy. Too many barriers exist to ensure even the simplest message can be misunderstood.

Communication is defined as "the sending and receiving of messages". It has been described as "the knitting which holds organisations together - and the thread which keeps coming apart".

Effective communication is a vital part of modern organisations and is the greatest influence on a company's effectiveness. All organisations depend on good communication in every aspect of their work. New technology offers more ways for us to communicate with each other. Yet with so many different media available, communication just isn't easy. Too many barriers exist to ensure even the simplest message can be misunderstood.

In the early 1970's the research and work of Richard Bandler and John Grinder developed into the tools and techniques now known as NLP. These can be used in personal and professional life to improve our understanding and influence in communication with others.

What is NLP? NLP, or Neuro Linguistic Programming, is the science of understanding our thought processes and emotions and using appropriate attitudes to influence our behaviour to help achieve greater success in our communications with others.

Where can NLP be used? NLP can be used extensively in organisations to improve inter-personal skills. Managers can use the tools to develop better relationships with their staff, to aid communication, to motivate employees and to build stronger teams. Sales people can adopt NLP techniques to build deeper rapport with their clients to help them uncover the clients' values and true requirements and to develop appropriate methods to further the relationship. Trainers can benefit from learning new techniques to engage their delegates and to further their learning experience through relevant communication. For everyone, NLP provides the tools and the techniques to enhance personal development through a better understanding of ourselves and others and the way we communicate.

How will NLP benefit business? Through using the tools and techniques, employees' effectiveness in communicating and working with others increases. Their professional success is more consistent leading to greater job fulfilment and improved customer satisfaction.

Although NLP is so much more than this, it plays a vital role in effective communication that really works.
